Most Loved Swirl Bowl Designs
Over the years, a few designs have quietly become favourites.
Some return regularly, others appear only occasionally, depending on materials, mood, and time in the studio.
FOREST
The Forest Swirl Bowl was the first design I ever made. It is hand-painted to create a soft, watercolour-like depth and remains one of my personal favourites.
POPPY FLOWER
The Poppy Flowers Swirl Bowl is hand-painted in an expressionistic style. Overlapping layers of red, pink, and warm yellow form the floral pattern, with darker tones and unexpected colour accents appearing as highlights.
The surface remains intentionally open and painterly, allowing colour shifts and brush marks to stay visible rather than resolved into uniform repetition.
BLUE FLOWER
The Blue Flowers Swirl Bowl is hand-painted in an expressionistic style. Broad, visible brushstrokes build the floral forms, while layered blues and deep green tones create movement and contrast against the light ground.
The painting remains deliberately loose, allowing the marks and variations to stay visible rather than resolved into symmetry.
FLOWER POWER
The Flower Power Swirl Bowl is hand-painted in an expressionistic style, bringing together a wide range of floral forms and colours. Roses, blossoms, and abstracted flowers overlap across the surface in layered blues, yellows, peach tones, and greens.
Rather than focusing on a single motif, the design embraces variation and density, allowing colour and form to coexist without hierarchy.
MAGIC BLUE
The Magic Blue Swirl Bowl is one of the most recognisable Swirl Bowl glaze effects. Layered blues melt and pool during the firing process, creating depth, movement, and subtle variation from piece to piece.
The result is luminous and atmospheric, with no two surfaces ever the same.
PURPLE ROCK
The Purple Rock Swirl Bowl is one of my personal favourite glaze effects. Deep purples and mineral tones break, pool, and shift during the firing, creating a sense of depth and movement that feels both calm and powerful.
Each piece develops its own character in the kiln, which is part of what makes this glaze so compelling. One collector once told me it was the most beautiful object she had ever bought - a comment that stayed with me, because Purple Rock tends to speak softly, but with presence.
BUBBLE
This design is created by blowing actual soap bubbles directly onto the Swirl Bowl during the glazing process.
As the bubbles land and burst, they leave behind organic, cellular patterns that cannot be planned or repeated. The result is a surface that feels light, playful, and alive, with each piece carrying its own unique rhythm.
Available in single or multiple colourways, from soft, airy tones to more vibrant, joyful combinations. A design shaped as much by chance as by intention.
Over the years, I’ve created many Swirl Bowl designs. From time to time, I like to return to some of them and make a small number again.
