Warm Greetings from My London Studio

This week was all about my mural. After many long sessions at the table, I finally completed the large ceramic wall piece for my garden, my most ambitious project so far. It is now ready to dry, carefully sandwiched between boards, which will take about two weeks before its ready for its first firing. I have already started exploring colour schemes and can’t wait to see how it transforms once it’s up on the garden wall.

At the Studio Table

Working on something at this scale has been both momentous and deeply rewarding. It stretched my patience, my workspace, and my imagination in the best ways. I am already planning another mural, this time for the kitchen, and I love how ceramics keep opening new paths for expression. The possibilities feel endless: form, texture, storytelling, utility. Each piece leads to the next.

With a project this large, I also realised how much my background in architecture still informs my approach. The planning, structure, and spatial awareness I learned then finally had a chance to shine through, which felt both nostalgic and deeply satisfying.

Work in Progress

Luckily, before starting the mural, I watched a few videos and got some helpful advice on planning. I created a full layout map, traced the position of every piece, numbered each tile, and took plenty of photos. It is already proving useful for testing colour schemes and will make reassembling the mural much easier once everything is fired.

I am also thinking ahead to how the mural will live outdoors. Even though ceramic tiles are resilient, London winters can drop below zero, and water caught in tiny cracks can freeze and expand. I am currently experimenting with ways to protect the surface and make the piece durable long-term.

From the Kiln

Nothing new from the kiln this week, but there is progress. Most of the snake collection has now been bisque fired and is cooling as I write this. If all goes well, next week will bring the first glazed results and hopefully a few surprises.

Until next week,
